The 3Ts MOOCs Debate: Targets, Types, and Tensions
Wednesday, April 06, 2016
I will be in DC this weekend for an extended weekend. I will be there for the annual AERA conference from Friday April 8th to Tuesday morning the 12th. Then I will head home for 2 days before heading to New Zealand. Mimi Lee from the University of Houston, Tom Reeves from the University of Georgia, and I will have a debate on Monday at 6:45 to 8:45 pm (see flyer). Our colleague, Tom Reynolds from National University, may join us via Zoom. Our slides and the announcement and other things are posted to my TrainingShare website as well as Dropbox. You can even find the papers that we are reading to prepare for the debate.

Freebies: The first 40 people who come to the session will get a signed and free copy of our recent book, "MOOCs and Open Education Around the World." The people who ask questions during the debate, will get a copy of our special issue of the International Journal on E-Learning (IJEL) on the same topic. The book is being translated to Korean, Chinese, and Arabic. There have been many positive reviews of the book since it came out in July, including a comprehensive review today in the International Women Online Journal of Distance Education from someone in Turkey.

Mimi Lee and I will also have a session on our MOOCs and open education research on Saturday late afternoon. And I have a roundtable session with my graduate students Saturday morning on teacher global education practices with technology. I hope to see some of you at our session Monday night. More details are below.

AERA Business Meeting: AERA SIG Computers and Internet Applications in Education

Session Type: Business Meeting
Business meeting agenda will include: (1) updates on SIG activities, (2) brief introductions of the current and SIG leadership elect, (3) SIG proposal submission and acceptance rates, (4) a panel and debate described below.

The 3Ts MOOCs Debate: Targets, Types, and Tensions

SIG—Computer and Internet Applications in Education

Curtis J. Bonk, Indiana University
Mimi Miyoung Lee, University of Houston

Thomas C. Reeves, The University of Georgia

In this session, Curt Bonk, Mimi Lee, and Tom Reeves will interactively debate the most effective types of delivery methods and target audiences related to MOOCs and open education. Each panelist will then select and defend what he or she believes is the most tense, pressing, or controversial issue(s) in the field (e.g., quality, accreditation, nanodegrees and micro-credentialing, personalization of learning, cultural sensitivity, retention, instructional design and pedagogy, etc.). After several rounds of debate, audience questions and comments will be solicited. The rounds of debate are: (1) Types of Delivery: cMOOCs vs. xMOOCs vs. pMOOCs vs pdMOOCs vs. ???; (2) Target Audience: Casual and informal lifelong learning vs. High school and college students supplements vs. Workplace skills gaps or other; (3) Tense Issues: Each panelist will select a currently trending, controversial, or tense issue or two and debate it as the most pressing issue(s) facing the field.

Bonk, Lee, and Reeves are co-editors of a 2015 book with Routledge on “MOOCs and Open Education Around the World” (
http://moocsbook.com/). To foster interaction, several signed copies of both their new book and their special issue on MOOCs and Open Education will be given to those who ask the most thought provoking and engaging questions.
